Oh. My. Word. The first round of award season (film and television) nominations are out which is good and bad. This morning's SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards nominations announcement was a tad shocking. There are waaaaay too many categories so let's just talk film, cast, leading and supporting roles.
For Best Actor, we've got Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant - will this finally be his year?), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl). These leading men are all deserving in their own way, but I think it's going to be between Leonardo DiCaprio (the guy needs an Oscar already and the winners of the SAGs usually end up winning Oscars) and Eddie Redmayne who fought until the very end with Michael Keaton for last year's Best Actor honours for his role in The Theory of Everything. For Best Actress, the competition is just as intense. Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn - have no clue who she is), and Sarah Silverman (I Smile Back - was definitely not expecting her to land a nomination) are competing against one another. I am so torn between Cate Blanchett and Brie Larson because they both do an amazing job in their films and have gotten a lot of buzz thanks to festival season. As for the supporting roles, let's switch things up and start with supporting ladies. Rooney Mara (Carol - this is interesting because she is actually eligible to be in the lead actress category), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight - so pumped to see this film over the holidays), Helen Mirren (Trumbo), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs). I am rooting all the way for Rooney Mara since this film is so groundbreaking. Supporting gentleman are Christian Bale (The Big Short), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation - watched this on Netflix and wasn't feeling it), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Michael Shannon (99 Homes), and Jacob Tremblay (Room). Gahhh! I don't know which one to choose partly because I've only seen one of the films, and partly because... Well... I don't have any other reason. Now for one of my favourite categories: Best Cast! The casts of Beasts of No Nation (again, don't understand the big deal), The Big Short (star-studded film), Spotlight (star-studded film), Straight Outta Compton (really?), and Trumbo (star-studded film). Holy! I am for all of the above casts (except for Beasts of No Nation) to win. There are also television categories, but let's be honest... Who really cares about those versus the film categories? You can see a complete list of nominees here via E! Online. Did anyone get snubbed (*cough* actors in Spotlight *cough*)? Are you rooting for any of the above films or stars?
