Lovina Yavari is one of the coolest chicks around and she's absolutely killing it in the gamer and comic con realm. She's recently booked Shazam, Taken, Polar and Gangland Undercover and was kind enough to spare some time to chat. Check out our Q&A below: What are some common misconceptions that people have about the gamer/comic con scene? I'm not too sure anymore. Comics, Video Games, and Anime have been a huge part of pop culture over the last decade. I guess maybe some might find it intimidating to get into. There is a ton of fandoms. I've had some people ask me for advice when it came to reading comics. I do see how it can be a little overwhelming when you're starting out. There are over 100 monthly single issues being released, a lot of the DC and Marvel series have been rebooted. Anyone that feels that way should know, us nerds LOVE helping out and giving suggestions. We're friendly and quirky as shit, so don't be shy. Where do you see yourself in a few years from now? Having an insane amount of ridiculous skill sets under my belt and having my passport book completely filled. I want to get my pilot license, get back into robotics, own a loft, release my graphic novel, create avatars for VR Chat, and have an entire clothing line. I just have my jackets out at the moment. I collaborated with a Toronto based company called Pink City to bring my vision to life. They have a wicked line. There are a lot of things that I want to dip my hands into. I'd also love to invest into the Space X program when I have more bank. Do you have a system that you use to achieve your goals? I write all of my goals in a journal and daily planner. I find myself frequently adding to it. I have a 5 year plan and a yearly one that I stick to. I write monthly goals in my calendar, and daily ones on sticky notes that I leave on my mirror or laptop. They range from doing laundry, paying off bills, future travel goals, to designing concepts for my photo shoots or clothing designs. I've been sticking to this method since I was in a grade school. I haven't felt overwhelmed with tasks in years. I've learned to master breaking everything down into more manageable portions. This post was submitted by contributor Melissa Vandermeer. What better reason for you to throw a star studded bash with your squad. Spend your evening gossiping about celeb fashion, analyzing those awkward yet inspirational acceptance speeches, pop some bubbly, and nibble on fantastic eats. To honor this amazing event, we’ve gathered together our best ideas to help you host the best Academy Awards themed party. 1. Let the voting begin. Make use of this free printable voting ballot from TheGoldKnight.com for your party. It’s gathered all of the nominees in each Oscar category. You can vote just like the real academy. Print a copy for each guest, or even email your guests a copy ahead of the party, to really get a jump on the excitement. 2. Red Carpet Looks Ask your guests to wear their most fashion forward looks for the night. For added fun, create your own ‘fashion’ awards ahead of time! Best dressed male? Most fabulous mani? Or, most likely to suffer a wardrobe malfunction? You can even hand out your own ‘Oscar’ awards to your category winners! 3. Gourmet Eats Your Academy Awards bash calls for modern, gourmet-chef-type eats. Our suggestion? A crostini station. A crostini is basically any thinly sliced baguette, bread or ‘toast’ with a topping. The topping options are endless. Some of our faves include shrimp and spicy avocado, or brie with sliced apple and prosciutto. Display your toppings individually on platters, slice up your favourite bakery breads, and let your guests go crazy assembling their culinary concoctions. Search out crostini recipes here . 4. Pop it like champagne. The bubbly is a classic match for an awards show. If you’re mostly having gals over, try picking up a bottle of trendy , sparkling rosé. Any bottle of the less expensive sparkling wine will definitely work. For the non-champagne loving guests, check out Town & Country’s Magazine’s list of Oscar 2018 Cocktails. For your non-alcoholic guests, stock up on chilled sodas or sparkling juices. 5. Oscar glam.
Easily add Oscar glam to your party by searching out the best ‘Hollywood’ themed decor online. Below we have captured some shots from an Academy Awards party we styled last year. We love the idea of fresh red flowers in a hat box, gold balloons, and awards-show themed candy bar display. Don’t forget to catch Saverina’s Oscar nominee recap on-the-blog, and cheers to a fabulous party! ~ Melissa, XO. Party Stylist and Founder of Party Girls Company Boy has the world changed since I first started my journey in this industry almost 7 years ago. YouTube was barely a thing, I don't think Snapchat existed and people watched TV and movies on their actual TVs whenever the programs aired because recording wasn't an option. Now, there are series exclusive to YouTube like "We Are Savvy" starring 15 year-old Spencer Barbosa which is now in it's second season. She has over 64,000 followers on Instagram and is as humble as can be. I was recently lucky enough to be able to chat with her about her success and what we can expect for the next season of her show. Check out the Q&A below: What is your personal definition of success? To me being successful is waking up every single day with the feeling of ambition and determination. Being successful is being happy and hardworking. Sucess is not measured by the money in your bank account or the number of followers you have. Sucess is being happy with what you have and agonizing how much hard work you have put into getting that far. You’ve acquired quite the following - what advice do you have for those looking to follow in your footsteps? Yes! I absolutely love what I do, I strongly encourage everyone to follow their dreams. My advice for anyone who would like to get into acting and social media is to love yourself. There are tons of people who love to support and motivate you, but there will always be those very few people who are just negative. Just try not to let it get to you, and surround yourself with people who believe in you constantly. Ps. I believe in you, you got this. Can you tease what we can expect to see in the second season of “We Are Savvy”? Season Two of We Are Savvy is INCREDIBLE .... you will not be able to stop laughing, it's so funny. Season two features tons of YouTubers, diys and challenges. It's literally my favorite things all in one show....it features fashion, makeup, singing, friends, and laughter. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. Be sure to subscribe to "We Are Savvy" here, and follow Spencer on Instagram @spencer.barbosa.
I've been MIA for the last few weeks since the Oscars nominations came out, but it's for a pretty good reason. I've been binge-watching and reviewing some of the amazing new Netflix Originals coming your way soon.
One that stood out to me was Seven Seconds - starring Regina King and David Lyons. In an instant, life is forever changed for Brenton Butler and his family. After a white cop accidentally hits and critically injures a black teenager, a northeastern city explodes with racial tensions, an attempted cover up and its aftermath, and the trial of the century. No matter where you stand regarding police brutality, you will 100% feel something every minute of every episode. It's uncomfortable, raw and relatable considering what we're currently dealing with in the real world. Regina King is a f*cking goddess, absolutely killing it in her role as the teen's mother. I think Seven Seconds is going to be getting a lot of buzz and it is possible for it to get a second season in light of the cliffhanger at the end of the final episode. Watching this was a bit challenging - both mentally and emotionally. I found myself having to take breaks and watching Friends in between episodes. I give Seven Seconds a 10/10. It's impossible for me to go in to Kitsu (apparels and accessories boutique store located at 195 Locke Street South in Hamilton, Ontario) and not buy something. In fact, I bought almost everything that I wore during my photoshoot for our collaboration. Photographer Jessie Golem volunteered her time on a cold Saturday morning to shoot a few of my favourite looks consisting of clothing from the shop. I've been longing to do one of those cliché blogging photoshoots and this was the perfect opportunity. Now, you're probably wondering what this has to do with entertainment... Well, some of the clothing brands that Kitsu carries have been sported by some of your favourite celebs such as JLo (Lazypants) and the Kardashians (Quay sunglasses). Everything from the shop is made in Canada and quite affordable. They have a wicked sale that ends this Saturday. That red dress that gives me the girl in the red dress dancing emoji vibes? Only $25! Check out their online store here. Here are some highlights from the shoot: |
