In a couple of weeks, a highly anticipated play called Judas Noir will be opening and I was lucky enough to chat with the lead Adrian Walters. Check out the Q&A below:
Tell us a little bit about Judas Noir and the story behind it. Well I thought you'd never ask, JUDAS NOIR is an adaptation of Stephen Adly Guirgis' play "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot", written and directed by Leighton Alexander Williams, produced by BDB Productions Inc. This story follows the court trial of Judas Iscariot, the disciple notoriously known for betraying Jesus Christ. While this case gets unraveled, parallels are drawn between the persecution of the Jewish People (during this archaic time), and Black citizens of today. This play deals with themes of: betrayal, regret, forgiveness, and the loopholes that exist in our justice systems presently, and potentially in the afterlife. What is your role in this? I've been blessed with the challenge of playing the great Jesus Christ of Nazareth. My goal is to continue to humanize this iconic figure and hero, while respectfully adding a new perspective to his character. Outside of that, six of the other cast members as well as myself are producers on this production via our company BDB Productions Inc. Which we started for the sole purpose of creating the kind of roles we've always dreamed of playing but rarely get the opportunities to in TV & Film. Why should people go see this play? I think our writer/Leighton did a really great job of capturing the many different personalities of society in this adaptation. Especially back in those biblical times and modernized it in a way that almost anyone can understand as well as see themselves within and the justifications each character holds for even worst of their actions. Let alone its an all black cast, something I don't believe has been done before in the telling of this beloved story here in Toronto. I can honestly say it has been an absolute pleasure being in rehearsals over the last month and a half bearing witness to the high caliber of work being brought by our cast. So i'm sure it will be a sensational show. Although I may be biased so you just might have to see it for yourself... Judas Noir opens on June 13th to the 18th at Tarragon Theater in Their Extraspace.
