I have had the pleasure of knowing and supporting Francois for a few years now, so I was super pumped when he released his debut single 'Spaceman'. He's as talented as he is humble and is absolutely killing it on his press tour. Francois was a huge supporter back when The Saverina Show was a thing. I am honoured that he took the time to answer a few of my questions. Check out our Q&A below: Did you learn anything new about yourself and/or your craft while recording this single? A lot about the creation of this single was about letting go control over my usual creative process. I generally tend to write songs inspired by personal experiences, but decided to write 'Spaceman' as a fictional story. The story however still explores a theme that is quite personal to me. I am also usually very meticulous about each lyric and phrase, but took on a more free approach with the lyric writing. I took one or two stabs at a sentence and then just accepted whatever came out and settled on it as the final phrase. My co-producer, Kibwe Thomas, and I even approached the production & tracking phases with a much simpler approach. A bit of a less-is-more approach. We kept the production fairly sparse and only did two takes on the vocals. We settled on the one we liked the best and refrained from selectively cutting and dropping in sections from other takes. In doing the above I learned that stepping outside of my regular writing and recording approach inspires a whole new sound and creates a pressure free environment in which creativity can flow freely. What message do you want listeners to take away upon hearing the single? Some people believe that there is only one perfect person for you. Others believe that a person could fall in love with anyone and then that person becomes the perfect person for you. The message, or more so the theme of the song is that, regardless of what you believe, odds are if you're single, the person you'll one day choose to spend the rest of your life with, is somewhere out there right now at this very moment. ‘Spaceman’ explores this idea. The narrative in the song follows a space traveller who embarks on an almost dream like journey covering extreme distances and overcoming great obstacles in search of his one person. In a sense this song can also be a metaphor of someone’s journey as he/she searches for, and discovers whatever it is that serves as their muse. How do you establish your sound and what you have to offer in the industry? I’ll tackle sound first - I think that the most important thing, when it comes to developing/establishing ‘my sound’, is to make the music that comes naturally to me. To follow my instincts and to, in an almost selfish way, make music that I will love to listen to. A concert promoter once told me: ‘Don’t try to follow trends. Take a chance and make music that resonate with you. If you’re lucky it will resonate with others.’ That said - I am very thankful for, and draw a lot of inspiration from the artists’ whose music I love. I have learned very much from them. With regards to what I have to offer in the industry - I care very much about making music and using it for good. I believe that we as musicians, songwriters, producers and the industry, now more than ever, have to use music to fight for equality, to protest what is not right, to do away with division & unite people - to spread hope & love (as cheeseball as that might sound). I usually hit the couch with all of my favourite junk food and binge watch Halloween flicks. This year, Netflix is taking over and created a full Halloween guide to make things a million times easier. Their picks from start to finish are on point and I can't wait to get started. Casper is one of my all time favs and Stranger Things is an obvious choice with the second season being released on Friday. Then, you have classics like The Exorcist, Friday The 13th and Paranormal Activity. Evil Dead, Hush, Slasher and Bates Motel are new to me, but since they're on the guide I'll be giving them a shot. Last but not least and first on the list, my dog Versace's fav (he loves a good ol' cartoon), Hotel Transylvania.
You've got a good mix of everything so there's no reason why you shouldn't join me for a Halloween night Netflix binge! Are you up for the challenge? What are your fav snacks? The countdown is on until Stranger Things season 2 starts streaming on Netflix.
Friday is the big day (you've been living under a rock if you didn't know that) and I have some new stills to share with you to help hold you over until then. You can also check out an exclusive preview of what's in store this season here. Happy Monday, or should I say happy #MusicMonday?! This past week, I caught up with Hamilton rapper Buddah Abusah ahead of the release of his single "Surfin' Surf". Check out our Q&A below: What is the inspiration behind your single? The inspiration of Surfin’ Surf is fun. I wanted to make something that I could play and really vibe to. It ended coming out perfectly because the more I got into the song the more I wanted people around me to really mess with the vibe. How would you define success? Success is a combination of within and were you want to be in life. Success is just another word for self-wealth to me, not about financial status. If you’re striving and doing what you love, how can you not be successful? It's inevitable for the universe to put you in the path of success to get you where you want to be because that is what is on your constant mind. You can’t be success doing what you don’t like. You may go high up in the company but if you’re not happy, you will never feel true success from within. If you want success (not financially - that will come) do what you love. Do you have a system that you use to achieve your goals? The system is time. Be humble. Spread peace. Spread love. It's a sad day for music fans and Canadians.
