Shit just got real. The Academy Awards announced the nominees this morning and I have lots of thoughts and feelings.
Is it me, or were last year's winners easier to predict? I was conversing with my cousin's husband about the nominees and predictions since we're doing an Oscars pool at our second annual Oscars party. We remembered how Mad Max surprisingly took all of the awards last year leading my dad to win the pool, but are torn as to who this year's "Mad Max" will be. I'm rooting for La La Land for at least the technical categories as they lead with the most nominations. Moonlight is their competition for the major categories such as Best Picture. The categories I'm most confident in betting on are Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Foreign Film, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature. The winners have been consistent (so far - we still have the SAGs this weekend). I was sure Best Actress would be going to Natalie Portman all season long, but I was wrong (did I really just admit that?). Isabelle Huppert (Elle) took it away from her at the Golden Globes. Best Supporting Actor has gone to Aaron Taylor-Johson (Nocturnal Animals) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight). This weekend at the SAGs, the award could go to one of the two or someone completely different. Ugh. Only time will tell and I have a few more films to watch before I can be sure of my predictions. The countdown is on as I try to figure out how the heck award season has gone by so fast. Check out the list of nominees here and sound off in the comments below. |
