This guy is the first person everyone should think of when someone mentions the city of Hamilton. You would never even know that Daniel Hyams wasn't born and raised there because of all of the love he has for the hammer.
Daniel was actually raised in London, England and left everything he knew behind and immigrated to Canada back in 2012. I, along with many other people, are thankful for this. It has been 3.5 years since he made the big move and now he has a Cable 14 show called Coming to Hamilton and recently launched C2H Mag. Check out our Q&A below: What is your favourite thing about Hamilton and what about the city made you want to spread the word through a magazine and TV show? I guess my favourite thing about the city is that it welcomed me in. I was not meant to be here when I came 3.5 years ago, I was determined to go to Toronto, because that was all that I knew and all I could relate to, coming from a major global city like London, UK. But destiny had other plans! That’s not to say it has been easy… Far from it, I think that success can make actions look easy, and there have been more failures than successes. I think that’s the same for everyone, we just don’t always talk about the failures, which is a shame because we can learn much more from them than actual success. So, my motivator for the TV show and magazine was to highlight Hamilton as a city of people choosing to come here, choosing to settle, stay and contribute through various ways and means. Who do you hope to eventually collaborate with for the magazine? I want to collaborate with everyone and anyone who wants to be a part of this and who can relate. This is a community-led project, not a business venture for me. I don’t want to own and run another business at the moment, and for the foreseeable future. If you feel you can and want to play a part, come aboard! That’s not just in writing for the mag, but ways to expand and excel the concept. Help me take this forward for all of us to share in. I plan to arrange a series of ficus groups soon to gather ideas and feedback, so stay tuned! Where can we find C2H Mag? It’s in numerous locations but definitely at True Hamiltonian store on Ottawa St and Durand Coffee on Charlton W & Caroline. They both were major contributors to content, so you’re bound to grab a copy there! Also, it's free to download online at www.issuu.com/ba93 which is named after my flight number when I came here. _________________________________________________________________________________________ Check out Coming to Hamilton here, and go grab a copy of C2H ASAP! Brittany Johnson is a Toronto-based actor and writer, recently appearing on Space Channel's Dark Matter, CW's Reign, CBC's Murdoch Mysteries, and her new short film, Expiry Date, will grant Brittany her first screen writing credit.
She was kind enough to spare some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few of my questions. Check out our Q&A below: When was the exact moment you realized that acting/writing was your calling? You know, there was never really an exact moment for me. Acting was something I grew up doing. Putting on shows with my sister, or childhood friends. Always wanting to get the video camera out and record them, so we could watch them back. I was always a ham in that way. Then it evolved into acting classes and singing classes, which turned into plays and ultimately the Film and TV I’m doing now. Writing is in the similar storytelling vein, so I don’t think it’s any kind of stretch that it came naturally to me as well. I grew up reading quite a bit, so writing my experiences and emotions really became, and has become, second nature to me. I did always know I would write books, but screenplays was a bit of a surprise. You’re a strong supporter of lady bosses. Why? I do love me a good lady boss. First and foremost, I think it is so incredibly important that we support, pave the way, and make room for each other. I’m a firm believer in helping others up, and creating opportunities for one another. I think that is the only way we can really get our voices out there, and our stories heard. I believe we do have a problem, especially in the film and television industry, with sexism. The only way to fix this is to acknowledge the problem, which I think we are making progress on. Then, to create more opportunities and support systems for women to come in to this field and really create work that isn’t based on stereotypes, and the sexualization of females/female bodies. Who are some lady bosses that you look up to? I really support all women who are going out there and shaking up the old of what we think it traditionally means to be a woman. Not only in the work place, but in our day to day lives as well. On a larger scale, I would say I look up to women like Geena Davis who created www.seejane.org, the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in media, who's slogan is “If she can see it, she can be it”. I also can not get enough of Jill Solway. The creator, writer, producer for the show Transparent. Writers like Nora Ephron, Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling, to name a few. From my own city, Toronto, I really admire people like Molly McGlynn, a Writer/Director who currently has a film at TIFF, and who's writing takes me from laughter to tears in an instant. Katie Boland and Gail Harvey, are constantly inspiring me, and really make me continually set my bar higher. My dear friend Talia Brown, who although she is in the Fashion Industry, and not directly Film and TV, is a ridiculously gifted Lady Boss, and building her empire by leaps and bounds all the time. And lastly, my own producer of Expiry Date, Mariah Owen. Who owns her own production company, works like no one else I have ever met, all on top of being an incredibly kind soul. Women who inspire me are women who unabashedly go out into the world and say “Here is my voice. Here is my art. Here is my story. Do not feel alone. Do not feel ashamed.” To me, that is what I strive for and what motivates me to create the work I do. _________________________________________________________________________________________ Brittany has a bright future ahead of her, a head on her shoulders, and is extremely grounded. Be sure to check her out on Twitter, Facebook and find out more information about her and Expiry Date here. I think my new Cable 14 gig, "What's Happening, Hamilton?", is worthy of having its very own #WhatsUpWednesday post.
Prior to this, I hosted "Hammer Happenings", and this is just a step or two (or ten) up from that. The goal of WHH is to keep Hamiltonians (and others in Cable 14 viewing areas) informed about all of the cool events going on in and around the city. I promote everything from concerts to training sessions for your toddlers and dogs. What I love most about doing this - aside from the lovely people I get to work with - is I get to learn something new about the city and myself each week. I'm free to experiment with my hosting to see what works and what doesn't. I look forward to completing a whole season of this and seeing where this goes. You can check out the show here and find out what's happening in Hamilton here. I fought with myself for a couple of hours trying to find a reason not to write about Douchebag Lochte, but it's Tuesday and he's trending. I apologize in advance.
A new season of Dancing With The Stars premiered with its interesting lineup and the only thing anyone is talking about is Lochte. He "felt like someone ripped his heart out" when protestors rushed the stage while Carrie Ann Inaba was attempting to comment on his and partner Cheryl Burke's performance. Rumour has it that there were a row of audience members sporting white anti-Ryan Lochte t-shirts and were later kicked out. The two protestors that rushed the stage were later arrested My question is, how the hell were they allowed into the show in the first place? Were they wearing something to cover up the shirts when they were let in? Security presence should have been upped due to having a contestant who's completely made a fool out of the country. But, what do I know? I know that I really felt for Cheryl and the rest of the DWTS cast. That has to be terrifying and everyone is pretty shaken up. Derek Hough claims that he kicked out protestors following the ambush. My only hope is that this is a one time thing. What are your thoughts? Comment below or tweet me @MissSaverinaS!
Can we talk about the time Celine Dion belted Missy Elliott's 'Work It' a.k.a. my favourite song in the whole wide world?
Leave it to Ellen to make this happen. She had the lyrics to some of our favourite rap songs (Nelly's 'Hot In Herre', Britney Spears' 'Work Bitch' and Missy Elliott's 'Work It') on a teleprompter and had Celine belt them out alongside a pianist. The results were epic. I couldn't pick just one song where she killed it because the whole thing was just hysterical. The only thing that would make this better is if Ellen joined her - sadly that did not happen. I don't know about you guys, but when I think of someone like Celine Dion and the genre she's used to, I expect them not to have a personality. Well, she's the exact opposite and you would know that if you watch any one of her interviews. Keep slaying, Celine! Watch the viral video below: |
