Season 2 of Gotham and Season 9 of The Voice premiered last night, and newbies Minority Report and Blindspot made their debuts. They all sucked.
Okay, that's not true - however, they could have all been better. Or maybe my expectations were set too high. Regardless, I was not loving the first official night of fall series premiere week. It's not all that fair to judge Blindspot, since I didn't even watch it. I'll get back to you on it in this week's edition of #TuneInThursday. BUT, I did watch Gotham, The Voice and Minority Report. 1) Gotham Within 10 minutes of watching I ditched Gotham for The Voice because a) Ben McKenzie's hair is weird looking, and b) it just didn't capture my attention like every episode of season 1. I will give the actor that plays the joker some well-deserved credit. Maybe I'll tune in again when he's the main focus of the show. 2) Minority Report Based on the infamous sci-fi film, there is no better timing than now, in the Hollywood reboot era, to air the series. I have a major confession: I only tuned in to see Nick Zano, my first celebrity crush back when he was on What I Like About You with my former idol Amanda Bynes. He plays one of the twins (they have split visions of murders before they happen - one sees what happens, the other gets the information). It didn't totally suck, but I did find myself contemplating tuning out in the beginning. The ending left me wanting more, so we'll see how I'm feeling after the next episode. 3) The Voice I would have to say that reality competition shows are my guilty pleasure because don't like admitting that I'm a fan of something that has a big following (weird, I know). Blake Shelton and Adam Levine's bromance never gets old, and I am envious of Pharrell's effortless swagger. Also, Gwen Stefani is a waaaay better judge than diva Christina Aguilera. For the hour that I was around for (Minority Report started at 9, The Voice went until 10), I didn't have any strong feelings about the contestants or the judges. It was the same as every season. Sad story, happy story, inspirational story, Blake vs Adam, Gwen vs Pharell, etc. I will probably come back when the battles begin, as per usual, since that's the best part of the show. On tonight's TV agenda: Scream Queens (Lea Michele, Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis) and The Muppets (don't lie, you're going to watch it too). Now it's time for you to sound off: What did you watch last night? Which show are you ditching? Which shows are you head-over-heels for? Comment below, or tweet me @MissSaverinaS! Let's skip the small talk and get straight to it. The fashion is the least of our worries, so we can skip that too (if you really want to know who was best dressed and worst dressed, you can tune in to a crappy episode of Fashion Police tonight or use this thing called Google). The Highlights: 1) Holy Hotness Batman! It was approximately 106 degrees on the red carpet - apparently a nightmare as it was the main focus of almost every red carpet interview. "Boy it's hot", "I'm sweating, how about you?", "My hair is soaked", and many other similar things were conversation starters. I have to give credit where it's due and say that despite the hot temps, Ryan Seacrest remained professional and acted like a complete gentleman - as per usual - helping the female stars make their way up and down the E! press platform. Also, Nick Jonas' ex-girlfriend (I'm sure she goes by another important title), Olivia Culpo, nearly fainted on the red carpet because it was so flipping hot. She claims to be fine after a little rest and exposure to AC. 2) Diversity, Breaking Records, & Standing Out Okay, this is going to be a loooooong one. First things first, diversity and record-breaking - it made my heart happy to see how much change has taken place at the Emmys over the years. Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson were the first two African-American women to be nominated in the same category (Best Actress, Drama Series), in the same year. Viola Davis ended up taking home the hardware, becoming the first black woman to win Best Actress in a Drama Series and her acceptance speech did not disappoint. She said, "The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity." Yessss Viola! She went on to talk about what it was like in the past for women of colour in the industry (lack of roles, opportunity to win such awards), and how different it is now. Her acceptance speech was then followed by a standing ovation. Sticking with diversity, a HUGE winner was the Transparent cast and crew. The groundbreaking show won a bunch of awards and used their time at the mic to call for change and respect in the transgender community. When Jeffrey Tambor accepted his award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series he thanked the transgender community for their patience, bravery, and sharing their stories. This made me really want to binge-watch Transparent. I think this is just the beginning of the show's ever so bright future. Now you may be wondering why he's sporting that green ribbon. It's not because he's awesome (which he is). In fact, Jeffrey wasn't the only celeb sporting the green ribbon at the Emmys. Plenty of stars were donning it to support Obama's plan to take on climate change. Continuing with the theme of standing out, Amy Poehler brought the funny when her pretty chill mug graced our screens while they were announcing the nominees for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (she should have won, but like every year JLD won). When the camera pointed at her, Amy was dressed in a hoodie, rocking shades, and chomping on a piece of gum. I bet all of the other stars were immediately filled with envy (I know I was! 3) Happy Goodbyes (Is That Even A Thing?) Some tears were shed as we parted with some of our favourite shows such as The Newsroom, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, and many more. Luckily, Mad Men and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart got to walk away with tons of pride and a few special trophies (hooray). Jon Hamm finally won Best Actor in a Drama Series, while The Daily Show With Jon Stewart won Best Variety Talk Series and a couple of other awards. The Misses: 1) Andy Samberg Did Not Impress Sadly, we have to do this. Every award show has its good side, and its bad side. Andy Samberg, The Lonely Island's lead singer and former Saturday Night Live cast member, seemed to have forgotten that he wasn't hosting an episode of SNL. The sketches were way too cheesy for my liking, and probably wouldn't have even made the cut on SNL. I often found myself begging the show to move forward (as if the Emmy gods could hear me) every time there was a torturous break in between awards. But, I will say that I enjoyed Andy's opening monologue... At least the second half of it (gotta give the guy a break, probably wouldn't do too good of a job hosting the Emmys myself). He made sure to take some shots at Donald Trump, Bill Cosby, and Kim Davis/Paula Deen, currently the most hated people in America and who knows where else. (Ignore the opening sketch - it's brutal.) 2) Spoiler Alert (Or Not) Sure, it was the thought that counted when the Emmys decided to honour all of our beloved series that came to an end this year - BUT, it was so not cool to air all of the ending scenes of the finales without warning! Like, seriously? I don't want to piss off anyone (you're probably already pissed if you watched the Emmys/still mourning the loss of your fav shows), so I will not add any media aids to enhance this point. Instead, I will proceed to end this never-ending award show recap. The End: I'd like to end this post the same way the Emmys ended their broadcast. The one and only Tracy Morgan returned to the stage for the first time in over a year since he was a victim in a car accident that left him in critical condition and got a standing ovation before he could speak. He said, "I'm here. Standing on my own two feet." I too gave him a standing ovation in my living room. This won't be the last time you see him on your TV. You can catch him hosting SNL on October 17th. What did you think of the Emmys? Comment below or tweet me @MissSaverinaS!
PS - Full list of winners here. Big winners (some mentioned above, some not) were Game of Thrones, Veep, Transparent, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, and Olive Kitteridge (definitely need to witness the supposed amazingness for myself later today). Are you a do-gooder? Even if you're not, this weekend is the perfect chance to literally step up for a good cause. The Lung Association of Ontario is hosting Stair To Care, challenging us to climb the bleachers at the Tim Horton's Field to raise money and awareness for asthma. There will be a few celebrity guests and though it may be late to register for the event, you can still sponsor the existing teams before it all goes down tomorrow. Check it out here and support something amazing! I absolutely adore Mindy Kaling after binge-watching three seasons of The Mindy Project on Netflix within a week and reading her first book Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me? (And Other Concerns).
The girl has mad style, an amazing personality and sense of humour, and is steps away from ruling the world (at least in my mind). Mindy is one hell of a writer and her road to Hollywood stardom was not exactly smooth. I love her comedy maybe a bit more than I love Starbucks and Snickers (HUGE). She should be everyone's #WCW. The only thing I have against Mindy Kaling is that the latest season of The Mindy Project started streaming on Hulu in the US today, and doesn't come to Canada until November 5th... #SadFace. I guess until she graces my TV screen with her presence again I can dive into her new book Why Not Me?. Are you a fan of Mindy Kaling? Who's your woman crush? Comment below or tweet me @MissSaverinaS! As much as it pains me to put this on my blog, it does fall under the category of entertainment news so I am obligated to say something.
You've probably stumbled upon something in your news feeds and timelines related to the successful launch of the Kardashian-Jenner clan's line of apps. Instead of going with the traditional website, they (their management and PR teams) took it a step further and launched personal apps with 'unique' content. According to all of their social media accounts (the promotional statuses were likely written by the same person), they've been working very hard all year to produce original content for their fans. The apps contain original photo and video shoots (Kim Kardashian's app) and tutorials (Kylie's app has a makeup tutorial featuring a surprise appearance by Caitlyn Jenner). From what I've heard and read, the apps have been doing quite well with full support from Apple. I have yet to download any of the family members' apps and have zero intentions of doing so. However, I wish the family all the best and I am happy that they are in the news for a legitimate reason. What do you think of this business move? Smart or plain stupid?
